Study on the Role of the Holy Spirit

John6:63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

The Holy Spirit is inside us!  John 14:17; Eph 2:22

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living & active in me!
Rom 8:11

NIV text note:  the Spirit in essence & action is characterized by truth.

The Holy Spirit does not speak on his own; he speaks only what he hears.  John16:13.  So it is absolute purity & single focus of the Father’s heart.  He does not act independently; he is not an independent agent.  There is always unity amongst all 3 persons of the Trinity.

“Jobs” of Holy Spirit:
Remind us of everything Jesus taught. John 14:17, 25-26

Lead us into all Truth.  John 16:12-13

Bring glory to Christ by taking from what is Christ’s (=all that is in the Father) & making it known to us.  John 16:13-14.  Wow!

Intercede with groans that words cannot express.  Rom 8:26, thereby helping us in our weaknesses.

Gives us peace. John 14:25-27…..?  So can we say that the Holy Spirit =peace?

Aids us in worship.  John4:23-24……? So is it possible to enter into true worship without the assistance of the Holy Spirit?  Or is this verse referring to our human spirit? (That seems to make more sense)

The Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children, and therefore heirs with Christ.  Rom 8:15-16.  The Sprit cries out “Abba Father!” Which goes against the spirit of fear.  Gal. 4:6-7

We put to death the misdeeds of the body through the Spirit. Romans 8:13; Eph 5:16-18

The Spirit focuses our minds & hearts on what the Spirit (& therefore God) desires; so that the mind controlled by the Spirit (not by sin) = life & peace. Romans 8:5-6

The law of the Spirit of life sets me free from the law of sin & death.
Romans 8:2; Eph. 5:16-18

The Holy Spirit bears fruit in us.  Gal. 5:22-23
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness & self-control.

The Holy Spirit provides access to the Father.  Eph. 2:11-22

Strengthens us with power in our inner being so that Christ can dwell in our hearts. Eph. 3:11-17

Brings unity to the Body of believers. Eph. 4:3

Fills the believer…it is possible to be filled with the Spirit -under the influence of- as one is when drunk. Eph. 5:18.   NIV text note: the Spirit empowers for worship, service & testimony.  Under God’s control. Col. 3:15+

Equips us with a sword for spiritual warfare which is the word of God.  Eph. 6:17

Empowers our prayers.  Eph. 6:18

Helps us during times of affliction & trials. Phil 1:19

Brings power, conviction, &/or joy at the presentation of the Gospel of Jesus.  1 Thes. 1:4-6

Gives us rebirth (salvation) so we can enter the kingdom of God. John 3:5

Gives life!  John 6:63.  True Life does not come from human flesh.

The Holy Spirit is the “living water” Jesus spoke of in John 7:37-39 inviting anyone who was thirsty to come to him.  Water was not always an easy commodity in the Middle East in Jesus’ day (or before)!  Clean water was precious.  This is Jesus’ statement during the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles in the temple.

Is my Counselor. John 14:16. He is ever present & with me forever.

The Holy Spirit will convict the world of guilt…in regards to sin b/c men do not believe in Jesus, in regards to righteousness b/c Jesus was going back to the Father, in regards to judgement b/c the prince of this world stands condemned.  John 16:8-12

Inhabited the prophets of O.T. Wen they were predicting the coming of Christ, his sufferings, and then his glory. They were not serving themselves, but us!  1Peter 1:10-12

Holy Spirit brought Jesus back to life and enabled him to “preach victory” (whatever that implies & entails) to the “spirits in prison” during the time between his death & resurrection.  1 Peter 3:18-20

The Spirit of glory rests on us when we are insulted because of the name of Jesus.  1 Peter 4:14

The Holy Spirit is our proof that Jesus indeed lives inside us. 1 John 3:24

The Holy Spirit is the litmus test for spirits: we will recognize the Spirit of God b/c any spirit which acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.  Any spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not of God.  1 John 4:1-4, also 1 John 1:1.  Acknowledge here does not mean intellectual knowledge b/c the demons know & shudder…James 2:19& Mark 1:24.  Acknowledge here means not only to know it intellectually but to confess it publicly. The Holy Spirit testifies to who Jesus is!
1 John 5:6

Prophesied of by John the Baptist… Jesus will baptize by the Holy Spirit and by fire. Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8

Holy Spirit descended and lighted on Jesus after his baptism, and the father spoke, “this is my beloved son “… So the whole Trinity was present! Matthew 3:16-17; Mark 1:10-11; Luke 3:21-22.

Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit Luke 4:1 & was led by him into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Matthew 4:1; Mark 1:12

The power by which Jesus drove out demons Matthew 12:28

The Holy Spirit can be send against-blasphemed against, unpardonable sin… Attributing to Satan to miracles of Jesus. Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10

Great commission: as we go and make disciples we baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19

Holy Spirit spoke through David when he declared Psalm 110:1… Mark 12:36

Holy Spirit to speak through disciples (us) to see when we are convicted and brought up on charges because of Christ. Don’t worry before hand about what to say-it will be not us speaking, but the holy spirit. Mark 13:9-11; Luke 12:11– 12

Filled John the Baptist from birth Luke 1:15.

Filled Elizabeth & she prophesied when she heard Mary’s greeting…John the Baptist in the womb leapt & gave witness to Jesus. Luke 1:44-45

Holy spirit filled Zachariah and he prophesied. Luke 1:67+

Jesus returned in the power of the spirit Luke 4:14; Mark 1:12.

Jesus proclaimed Isaiah 61:1-2 over himself in Luke 4:18+. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me… has anointed me…”

Holy Spirit is given as a gift from a loving father to his children who ask Luke 11:13

Jesus prophesied holy spirit coming with power after he had gone back to the Father. Luke 24:49 (Joel 2:28 to 32 fulfilled in Acts 2)

Baptized the apostles (=gift from the father) after Jesus ascension. Acts 1:4-5, 8. Gave them power to fulfill the great commission (see Acts 2)

Holy spirit enabled apostles to speak in other tongues Acts2:4.

Filled them with power to speak the word boldly Acts4: 31; 11:24.

Holy spirit was lied to by Ananias and Sapphira, and they were killed for it Acts5:3

Holy spirit witnesses to the things of Jesus, and is a gift to those who obey God. Acts 5:31-32

Manifested in Stephen-“full of the Holy Spirit”. Acts 6:5; 7:55

Holy spirit can be resisted. Acts 7:51-52

Holy spirit was given to the Gentile believers as well. Acts 11:15-18

The Holy Spirit spoke and gave direction in response to worship, prayer and fasting. Acts 13:2 and then sent men out on a missionary journey. 13:4

Filled the apostles-Peter (acts 11:15), Paul (acts 13:9)

Prevented apostles were preaching in some areas. Acts 16:6-7.

Baptism of Holy Spirit unbelievers can be manifested in them speaking in tongue’s and prophesying. Acts 19:4-7.

Holy spirit compels us. See acts 20:22-Paul to Jerusalem.

Holy spirit warns us of dangers and trials see acts 20:23

Holy spirit of points shepherds and overseers of God’s flock. Acts 20:28+.

Demonstrate his power as the gospel message is preached-so that it is not about man’s wisdom or persuasive words but about God’s power. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5

Holy Spirit reveals God’s “secret wisdom “which God  destined for our glory that has been hidden before time began. 1 Cor 2:7

The HS Searches all things even the deep things of God so that we may understand what God has freely given us. And we speak in words taught us not by human wisdom but by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 1 Corinthians 2:10-13

Washes me, cleanses me of who I was-Holy Spirit washes, sanctifies, justifies me.
1 Corinthian 6:11

The Holy Spirit dwells in me-my body is his temple. Regarding sexual immorality-I was bought with a price! Honor God with my body. I am not my own. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Haggai 2- the promised glory of “the new house” in 2:4b…”for I am with you declares the Lord Almighty… My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.”

The Giver of the spiritual gifts to the Body of Christ.  1 Corinthians 12:4+ …”there are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit… Manifestation of the Holy Spirit and purpose =the common good. Message of wisdom, message of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues. These are all from the same Spirit, and He gives them out as He determines.”

Holy Spirit gives us the ability to say, “Jesus is Lord.”  1 Corinthians 12:3.

It is through the Holy Spirit that we are baptized into one body-many parts but one body in Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12.

Holy spirit writes on the human heart a testimony to what the Lord has done in their lives through ministry. 2 Cor 3:3

Brings freedom!  2 Cor 3:12-18 “The Lord is spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Transforms us into the image of Jesus. 2 Cor 3:12-18  “And through the Holy Spirit we are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory.”

The Spirit speaks to the seven churches, which I believe a representative of all churches/believers of all time-words of morning, affirmation, promise and declaration of Who Christ is. Revelation chapters 2-3

Holy Spirit transported the apostle John to heavens throne room. Revelation 4:2

The Holy Spirit says “come! Come, Lord Jesus. Come all who are thirsty. “. Rev 22:17
